Big-Hair Contest
Recorded in Huntington, Long Island.
Premiered July 18, 1992, on All Things Considered.

This story is about hair--big hair--the kind that was popular in the 80s and, in some parts of the country, the early 90s. In 1992, a disco on Long Island teamed up with a local hair salon to sponsor a big-hair championship. There was loud music, free drinks, and, of course, lots of hairspray. As one contestant put it, "You have to be a wild woman to have big hair. And I am the biggest hair and the biggest wild woman there is." Writer Beverly Donofrio reports.

Reporter: Beverly Donofrio / Producer: Dave Isay / Engineer: Caryl Wheeler.
